Accreditation Committee Meetings
The IAS Accreditation Committee
The Accreditation Committee was established by IAS to monitor and govern its accreditation programs. The committee meetings are modeled on a public hearing process that provides input from all interested parties and transparency to IAS programs, activities and accreditation criteria. IAS' public formulation of accreditation criteria is unique among accreditation bodies in the U.S. and abroad. The committee is appointed by the IAS Board of Directors and comprises individuals from a cross section of U.S.-based regulatory officials, subject matter experts, and individuals from the international community. Through the open hearing process, IAS establishes its accreditation criteria and gains valuable administrative and technical input regarding IAS programs. The committee has overall responsibility for monitoring all IAS programs and for approving criteria related to accreditation. Currently, the committee has approved over 20 accreditation criteria documents which are available to interested parties on the IAS website. Committee action usually leads to one of the two following outcomes:
- If the committee moves to hold an accreditation criteria for further study, the IAS staff uses this period of further study to resolve outstanding issues. If a proposed criteria is not approved due to dissenting public opinion or if additional technical input is needed, the criteria may be referred to the appropriate IAS Technical Advisory Council. Once pending issues are resolved, or if IAS management decides that there is benefit to be gained from further public discussion, the criteria is again placed on the Accreditation Committee agenda for deliberation at its next meeting.
- If the committee approves the proposed accreditation criteria, IAS staff will revise the criteria to reflect any changes made during the meeting and will prepare the final document for posting to the IAS website.
The meeting schedule and agenda of the Accreditation Committee are posted on the IAS web site approximately sixty days prior to each meeting. All IAS-accredited organizations and other interested parties are invited to attend the meetings and to provide verbal or written input at the meetings. To meet the growing interest from our international clients and to facilitate access to the proceedings of the hearings, IAS now webcasts all accreditation meetings. Meetings of the committee are governed by the IAS Rules of Procedure for Accreditation Committee Meetings which are approved by the Board of Directors.
