Industry depends on reliable assessment of testing and calibration laboratories, inspection agencies and fabricator inspection programs. Accurate test, calibration and inspection results are vital for the protection of public health and safety and to facilitate trade. IAS is committed to operating world-class, cost-effective laboratory and inspection accreditation programs that will ensure that the services of accredited bodies and organizations are consistent and of high quality.

Laboratory accreditation and uniform testing requirements help minimize technical barriers to trade and reduce the financial burden on manufacturers. Almost any evaluation of a product, material or piece of equipment is based on reports from accredited testing laboratories that are, in turn, supported by accredited calibration laboratories. IAS accreditation provides assurance that the services rendered by accredited laboratories are of good quality and have been evaluated and proven.

The IAS laboratory accreditation program is modeled on the international standard ANS/ISO/IEC Standard 17025:2005, General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories and is recognized globally by the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation and the Asia Pacific Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation.

Proficiency Testing and Interlaboratory Comparisons

Proficiency testing and interlaboratory comparisons (PT/ILC) are two closely related methods that a laboratory may use to demonstrate technical competence. PT/ILC provides independent feedback concerning a laboratory's actual performance, and can be used as a tool to monitor improvement efforts.

IAS supports the use of PT/ILC as an improvement tool. PT/ILC is required for IAS laboratory accreditation, and IAS is working with its national and international partners to ensure that necessary and appropriate PT/ILC is available for laboratories in all fields.

IAS Technical Advisory Council

IAS has formed a Technical Advisory Council (TAC) to help guide the organization on technical issues. The TAC is appointed by the IAS Board of Directors and is comprised of ten members selected from senior management positions within testing and calibration laboratories, inspection agencies and regulatory bodies. The council acts in an advisory capacity on matters regarding accreditation policies and protocol, conformity assessments, test procedures, calibration and other accreditation-related activities.

IAS Accreditation Committee

IAS has also established an Accreditation Committee composed of code regulators that is responsible for monitoring all existing programs and for approving accreditation criteria. Through its Accreditation Committee, IAS follows a public hearing process for adoption of accreditation criteria and related accreditation requirements. The IAS Board of Directors appoints the members of the Accreditation Committee.
