IAS Eyes Special Inspection Transformation
Although adoption of the International Building Code (IBC) by jurisdictions across the country is growing, enforcement of the provisions of Chapter 17, Structural Tests and Special Inspections is sporadic. In addition, several layers of redundant, duplicative requirements exist at the federal, state and local level when it comes to special inspections and fabricator approvals.
In response, IAS President Chuck Ramani, joined Vice President Randy Marwig of Western Technologies, Inc., (an IAS accredited testing laboratory and special inspection agency) and President Greg Force of Tindall Corp. in Spartanburg, South Carolina, at the recent PCI Convention/National Bridge Conference in Grapevine, Texas, to discuss IBC Special Inspection Requirements.
Ramani briefed the fully packed room of designers, fabricators and inspection agencies on the IAS accreditation process and the organization's commitment to assist industry in reducing/eliminating redundant accreditations/approvals.
Marwig's presentation was very informational and gave an excellent overview of the current situation from an accredited entity's perspective. Force voiced strong support for the third-party oversight, but asked involved parties to work diligently to reduce/eliminate duplicative programs.
